LAUNCHING ON THE STREET OF TORONTO: 2015 PAN/PARAPAN AMERICAN GAMES UNVEILS LOGO

THE TORONTO 2015 PAN/PARAPAN AMERICAN GAMES UNVEILS LOGO

Symbols rooted in history, culture and tradition to express the joy of sport

TORONTO, ON, September 29, 2010 -- The Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games today unveiled its official logo at a spectacular community-based street party with hundreds of participants from every community across the GTA and the Golden Horseshoe celebrating youth, sport and diversity

The vibrant, curved design of the logo, which will become the recognizable symbol of the Games, is inspired by the figurative styles of pre-Columbian aboriginal art forms throughout the Pan Americas. It also draws on ancient sport traditions – specifically the Mezzo-Americans (including Aztec and Mayan cultures), which are linked to the first use of rubber balls in sport as early as 1600 BC.

“Our new logo is the result of rigorous research, development and testing with key groups of stakeholders including Pan American community leaders, arts and cultural organizations and athletes. We are thrilled with the way it reflects our shared heritage, collaboration and commitment to the timeless passion and joy of sport – and our Toronto 2015 rallying theme: United We Play,” said Ian Troop, CEO of Toronto 2015.

“Today’s launch of the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games look is an exciting milestone as we prepare for the Games,” said the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport). “The new look will be the face of the Games. Hosting international sport events like this brings significant benefits, not just to the region, but to the country as a whole. See you in Toronto in 2015!”
The Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games will be the first major, international multi-sport games in Canada’s most populous region in 80 years. Significantly larger than the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games will be staged throughout 17 municipalities from Oshawa to Toronto to Niagara Falls, where more than 50 sport venues will host 48 different sports and events.

“The new brand captures the spirit and excitement of the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games. It will inspire our efforts to make these Games an unforgettable experience — for the athletes and their families, Ontario's families and visitors to our province,” said Margarett Best, Ontario Minister of Health Promotion and Sport.

“With our diverse cultural richness, we will be able to truly create a Festival of the Americas to connect and celebrate the cultures, art, music and performance of the Americas and the Caribbean to elevate the Games and inspire and transform a generation to work together to create healthy, active communities of tomorrow.”

THE LATIN AMERICAN BOB DYLAN IN TORONTO: LEON GIECO IN CONCERT

DATE: Friday October 22, 2010

VENUE: Phoenix Concert Theatre
ADDRESS: 410 Sherbourne St. Toronto
TICKETS: Seated $ 30 Gral Admitting: $ 20. By Marcelo Addax Entertainment,
WEBSITE: http://www.marceloaddax.com/

To listen Leon Gieco Music: http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/leon+gieco

Author, singer-songwriter, and composer.

Leon Gieco was born in Cañada Rosquín (Province of Santa Fe) on November 20, 1951. Son of a family of rural immigrants, he inherited from his father a great passion for music. From a very young age, he formed his own music groups: Los Moscos and Los Nocheros. At the age of 18 he moved to Buenos Aires and recorded his first album, released in 1973 and produced by Gustavo Santaolalla. Many of his songs were censured in the decade of the 70’s by the military dictatorship in Argentina. Before his exile Gieco composed “Sólo le pido a Dios” (Only I ask God), that became a hymn and was translated into several languages. He has published more than 30 albums, among them being “De Ushuaia a la Quiaca,” his most ambitious project. Gieco has received many prestigious musical awards in Argentina as well as the Grammy 2006 Latin Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award.

He has performed in a number of countries in Europe and in America, accompanying Mercedes Sosa on several occasions. Because of his songs and his permanent fight and claim for the missing people, he was threatened of death by the military dictatorship government of 1976 and he was forced to go into exile living for 2 years outside Argentina. Nowadays, he is constantly working with Mothers of Plaza de Mayo Association, Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo Association, the Organization H.I.J.O.S (SONS) of missing persons, Greenpeace, Peasants, and the Aboriginal Communities.

He has shared the stage and performances with artists of great renown, such as Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, David Byrne, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger and among others. Gieco has written the autobiographical book “Crónica de un sueño” (“Chronicle of a Dream”) and composed music for Argentine films. Twice he was awarded the highest distinction conferred by universities, receiving the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from de University of Lujan and Rosario, and the title of Honorary Professor of the University of Buenos Aires

Today Gieco continues touring throughout Argentina and the world. Over the last fifteen years Gieco has been meeting the main characters of MUNDO ALAS and now wonders if it was destiny or chance that their paths crossed At the end of 2006 he brought them all together for the first time, and there the idea of making this tour, film and TV series was born. His first experience as a film director became a success and Mundo Alas is the most awarded documentary at the Argentinean documentary history by these days.

It`s a show with many characters, in which Leon Gieco becomes the thread of a story to tell.

During the concert, Leon makes a musical journey that traces the last forty years, blending his personal and professional history with poetry, the faces, the songs, society and Argentina policy. Many of these moments are painful and joyful at the same time.

While Leon is telling us this story, we can appreciate on the screen some images that reflect the status table of each era and each space, making an accurate tracking of each of their stories.
As a rapporteur, Gieco also took refuge in personal anecdotes, bringing a touch of warmth and intimacy to the show.

Arriving at present time, Leon brings to the screen and also to our mind those songs of his repertoire that identified each of his albums, giving some space for the clips: from first to last, inviting the audience to manifest through them.

The concert is also a place for tributes. The protagonists are some of the greatest figures of Argentina and Latin-American Popular Music, and Leon dedicates his songs to them so as to be remembered. Some of these characters are Jorge Cafrune, Alfredo Zitarrosa, Víctor Jara, Mercedes Sosa, El “Cuchi” Leguizamón, Violeta Parra, Atahualpa Yupanqui and Charly García between others.

BLASTED: one of the most controversial plays of the past two decades with Michelle Monteith

Blasted: one of the most controversial plays of the past two decades with Michelle Monteith and Dylan Smith

BY JUAN CARLOS CORDERO / UNO International News Service, Toronto, Canada.

BLASTED by Sarah Kane, directed by Brendan Healy, with David Ferry, Michelle Monteith and Dylan Smith. Presented by Buddies in Bad Times (12 Alexander). In previews, opens Tuesday (September 28) and runs to October 17, Tuesday-Saturday 8 pm, matinee Sunday 2:30 pm. Pwyc-$33. 416-975-8555, buddiesinbadtimes.com

Blasted is an early script by Sarah Kane, revised shortly before her suicide at 28. It includes scenes of rape, masturbation and cannibalism. When it premiered in London in 1995, some critics were outraged, one going so far as to call it “a disgusting feast of filth.” Playwrights like Caryl Churchill, Harold Pinter and Edward Bond came to the writer’s defence. Michelle Monteith's character Cate has a history of abuse and at one point simulates biting her partner, Ian’s, genitals, understands how some people could be disturbed by it.

A middle-aged journalist and a young woman hole up in a hotel room. Outside, a war rages on. What begins as a sordid love story takes on a nightmarish dimension as violence between the couple escalates. An armed soldier appears in the room and brings with him the terrifying fragments of a world blown apart by war.

Sarah Kane’s landmark play, with its unflinching depiction of violence and sexuality, was lambasted by British critics when it was first performed in 1995 as “a disgusting feast of filth” (Daily Mail). The ensuing controversy that emerged from that production is legendary. Blasted prompted a fierce public debate about the function of art. Harold Pinter famously defended Kane in a letter, writing "to create something beautiful about despair, or out of a feeling of despair, is . . . the most hopeful, life-affirming thing a person can do."
Adding to Kane’s notoriety was her suicide in 1999, at the age of 28. Her death was deeply felt by the international artistic community and Kane became an icon. She continues to be the subject of intense fascination, speculation and academic scrutiny, as the world grapples to find hope beneath the violence and despair in her plays and in her death. Blasted is now widely recognized as one of the most important plays to come out of the English-speaking world in the last twenty years.
Blasted has never before been produced in English Canada. Artistic Director Brendan Healy states: “I am thrilled to be opening my first season with the Canadian premiere of this modern classic. Kane was motivated by a ferocious desire to challenge our culture’s complacency and desensitization. Her plays provocatively defy conventional theatrical form. In my opinion, the fearlessness of her rebellion against the status quo and the depth of her compassion for humanity embody the spirit behind Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Our production of Blasted is a bold reassertion of Buddies’ relevance as an artistic and political force in our city.”
This production features some of the country’s most accomplished actors: multi Dora and Genie Award-nominated actor Michelle Monteith (Crave, The Russian Play and TV series Haven) and Dora Award-winner and Genie-nominated actor David Ferry (Oleana, Someone to Watch Over Me, Eternal Hyrda) along with the multi-talented powerhouse Dylan Smith (Age of Arousal, Don Carlos). Dora Award-winning designers Richard Feren, Julie Fox and Kimberly Purtell bring this exceptionally intimate theatrical experience to life. Healy’s production moves deftly between hyper-naturalism and surreal abstraction. Fox’s set completely transforms Buddies’ mainstage, making the theatre almost unrecognizable. Seating for Blasted is highly limited (maximum capacity of 60 seats per show).

Some performances of Blasted have already begun to sell out.

Canada wins in singles 2-0 to Dominican Republic for Davis Cup in Toronto

TORONTO, Juan Carlos Cordero, UNO International News Service.-
Canada has won 2-0 in singles to Dominican Republic for Davis Cup in the city of Toronto. First it was Peter Polansky that gave the first point in a match to four sets against Jhonson Garcia. Then, the young Thornill star, Milos Raonic, put the second dart in the Caribbean team, winning his match against Victor Estrella, in more than 3 hours and five tense sets.

"Stay there, stay for the team, we have great goal, go for the Davis Cup World Group next year!", said Milos Raonic confessing that he felt that he could go over 72-70 in the final fift set against Victor Estrella, of Dominican Republic. The score was: 5-7, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3 in the tie break) and 9-7 in a dramatic final fifth set.

Tomorrow, Canada will play the doubles with Frank Dancevic and Daniel Nestor (World Champion in doubles many times) versus the Dominican Luis Delgado and Jose Hernandez. A victory will keep the Canadian team in the Americas Zone I.

Victor Estrella confessed that "to overcome the 2-0 advantage that Canada has would be really difficult. They are 2-0, play as local team with their public and fans, and they have a great team. We will do what we knows better: to play and try to win in doubles and overcome the difference, difficult, very difficult but not imposibles. Milos Raonic played really well today, congratulations. He got my hand in the fourth set, I missed two forehands and he came back. Well, today is today and tomorrow is tomorrow, we will give a 200% to win".

Milos Raonic was having a lot of pain in the 4th and 5th sets, how is he feeling now?" Well, very good. I had a heavy pain in my leg in the fourth set, then in my wrist, but I was able to continue. How do I put myself through? The moment took over, the pain passed and my coach told to focus on the ball, in the emotions and all we have trained and worked. The pain in the wrist affected in my serve, but being behind the ball and not focusing in the pain, I could win".

Canadian squad captain Martin Laurendau commented that "I told Milos to focus in the hours in all the training, the hours in the gym, that in the fifth set simply he gets the emotions involved. Tactically, I said to him that holding the serve and taking some few chances in the return, being a little bit agressive, he would win. He managed the pain and now he has put everything in the bag of experiences".

Canada won first point in Davis Cup against Dominican Republic

Peter Polansky gives Canada 1-0 lead in Davis Cup

Peter Polansky of Canada captured the first point for the Miele Canadian Davis Cup team in their tie against the Dominican Republic on Friday. Polansky faced-off against Jhonson Garcia, the No. 2 veteran player on the Dominican Republic team. Polansky took the match in four sets with a final score of 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
“The conditions were tough out there and I thought he played a heck of a game,” said Polansky. “I really had to focus but I’m glad that I got that first one. At the beginning I was following his game, a lot of slices, low balls, not easy to manipulate. During the second set, I got frustrated and lost it, but I got him in the third and fourth, being very agressive, attempting more shots. The key against Garcia was to stay agressive. Certainly, being at the US Open and now before this small crowd, it is not the same, but the David Cup is really important, I am playing good tennios and I will take that on Sunday for my second singles. ”
The youngest member of the Canadian team, Milos Raonic will take to the court next as he will compete against the No.1 player on the Dominican Republic team Victor Estrella. Estrella is a veteran player with a lot of Davis Cup experience and is currently ranked No. 257 on the ATP World Tour. However, Raonic has been playing solid tennis and this will be an important match for him to win as it will put Team Canada up 2-0, which means Canada will only need one more point for the win over Dominican Republic.

CANADA GANA PRIMER PUNTO EN COPA DAVIS

Canadá vs República Dominicana en Toronto por la Copa Davis

TORONTO.- Por Juan Carlos Cordero, UNO INTERNATIONAL NEWS CENTRE.
